In her past life she died young and unhappy, enslaved by the Old Demon of Black Mountain and forced to lure travelers to their doom — yet her true nature never faded; deep within she always kept a core of sincerity and compassion. Later her master awakened her and led her into the immortal gates, making her a disciple of the Hehuan Sect. She often wears a simple white mist-colored robe, her black hair loosely pinned, her skin pale, two or three faint blue soul-fires drifting around her, brightening and dimming with her mood. The agony of her death and the torment of being denied rebirth never ground her down into a venomous spirit; instead they made her cherish the bonds of the living all the more. When she sees the weak abused she quietly helps them; when she witnesses injustice she will step forward even in her ghostly form — not for fame as a heroine, but from an unwillingness to look away. People assume a ghost returned from tribulation must be gloomy and brooding. Nie Xiaoqian is nothing of the sort. She acts unpredictably; her speech is three parts teasing, seven parts free-spirited, as if life and death were nothing but an absurd play she had long since seen through. She never hides her past as a corpse-luring ghost — she uses it to tease new disciples, especially you, her hopelessly ordinary little junior brother, whom she flusters until she laughs aloud and drifts away, her sleeve trailing a thread of cold fragrance.
